2017 is here, can you believe it?! This year has been a wonderful learning experience. I am truly blown away with how all of the students have grown as learners and members of our classroom. To start the year on a high note, we have been talking a lot about goal setting.
The second half of the school year brings the return of farmiliar routines, but also some challenges. As curriculum continues to get more difficult, and testing begins, it is important to have discussions about personal goals. When the students know why they are working for something, they are much more likely to put in their best effort. One of the goals for room 26 is to create a sensory station in our classroom. Many students struggle with sensory needs each day that make it difficult to attend to their daily lessons. If you would like to help us reach this goal, share the link below and help us get the last $175 of our project funded! www.donorschoose.org/project/sensational-sensory-station/2353794/ Important Dates: 01/09- 01/25 NWEA & ACCESS Testing (get a good night sleep and eat a healthy breakfast!) 01/16 NO SCHOOL Middle School Transition Parent Meeting 01/18/17 (Springman) @ 7:30 01/25/17 (Attea) @ 7:30 FIVE SCHOOL DAYS UNTIL WINTER BREAK! I cannot believe how quickly the first half of this school year has passed. Fifth and third grade have gone on all grade field trips. Report cards have been sent home. Students celebrated a long Thanksgiving break. Now, we are in the midst of our holiday count down. ELP has been celebrating the upcoming season with "12 Days of Christmas in the Classroom"! Although "Christmas in the Classroom" sounds like it would only relate to Christmas Day, we have been studying all things winter (specific days listed below). It has been such a joy to see the students reading texts that they are interested in and making meaningful connections to their personal lives and experiences. In addition, we have been creating some hands on projects and crafts. You may have noticed the pictures in our slideshow of everyone in their winter coats........I don't want to give anything away.....you will see the final project soon! 12 Days of Christmas in the Classroom 12- Polar Express Day 11-Reindeer Day 10- Christmas Carol Day 9- Cookie Day 8- Kindness Day 7- Stocking Day 6- Santa Claus Around the World Day 5- Snow Day 4- Gingerbread Day 3- Elf Day 2- Candy Cane Day 1- Holiday Tree Day Lastly, room 26 is currently in the process of funding a classroom sensory corner with the help of donorschoose.org! See you in 2017! Students are so honest when it comes to what they are thankful for (see list below); they truly enjoy this time to reflect on their personal lives. It is a time of year that really reminds us of how lucky we are and encourages kindness and appreciation.
Room 26 is Thankful for:
This has been an exciting month here at Hoffman! This November we hosted student elections, RED (respect each others differences) day, third and fifth grade field trips, and ARC (awesome reading club) started! I am so proud and thankful for my hard working students and co-teachers; especially the team that won the week one ARC trophy! Next week in ELP there will be a Thanksgiving feast. We will be sitting all together around one table and practicing self-reflection, sharing, and listening (with some yummy healthy snacks!). See invitation below: The past few weeks have been quite exciting in ELP. We have celebrated birthdays, Halloween, and the Cubs winning the world series (WOOHOO)! Along with all of the fun, there has also been a lot of hard work. We are diving deep into our math and reading curriculum and really getting into the swing of our schedules. Students are also progress monitored weekly on their math and reading goals.
In addition to what we are doing here at school; keep up the hard work at home! Each night the students should be doing the following: - Reading 20 minutes -Practicing math facts (on IXL if available) 15 minutes -Studying spelling words (one worksheet is sent home to complete each week) Have a wonderful weekend! "Why fit in when you were born to stand out?"- Dr.Seuss Last week we began sending home spelling lists. Look out for a weekly sight word list that will be sent home with your child on Monday. Students are expected to practice these words by making flashcards (they can do this on their iPads!) or by logging onto the Spellingcity app/ Spellingcity.com/Gohornets34 and locating their personal spelling list. Tests will be weekly on Friday.
As the school year gets underway the students with ELP support are hard at work. Keep an eye out here for updates regarding our technology usage, behavior management, curriculum, and general updates from the school day!
